Petsafe Little Dog Trainer
PetSafe Little Dog Review
Most systems are designed with medium sized dogs in mind. This means that the collars are too big to be really comfortable on your smaller dog. The correction levels are also set with medium sized dogs in mind. The PetSafe small dog addresses those problems. It is also flexible, and can be used with other PetSafe collars to let you use the system with larger dogs too.
Box Contents
The Collar:
The collar is the reason you are buying this system. The collar is much smaller than a regular dog fence collar. The band is also more adjustable, letting you set it to even the smallest neck size. The correction level is also scaled down. You set the correction level on the collar itself, using the button on the side. The system has four correction levels. You set this by using the button on the side of the collar.
The battery is a special PetSafe small dog battery that you change by unscrewing with a coin. It is the only downside of this system. The battery costs around $8 and lasts about two months. A little tip, you can squeeze a third month out of the battery if you switch off the collar when you take it off the dog at night (just turn the battery to the off position).
You can use this collar with the other PetSafe in-ground systems and vice-versa. So you could use this with you Chihuahua, the PetSafe stubborn dog with your great dane, and the PetSafe deluxe collar with your Labrador.
Base Station:
The small dog uses the premium PetSafe base station that is also used by the PetSafe Deluxe. The base station is capable of covering 25 acres (5,000 feet of boundary wire). It has the basic controls. The boundary width dials lets you set how widely the signal transmits out from the wire. You have a power status light and a loop status light to tell you there are no problems with the loop. A side switch to set it up for big, small and medium sized installations. Two toggles connect up the boundary wire loop. There is a third toggle to ground the system in case of lightning strikes, you are going to need a grounding rod nearby to hook this and most people don't. So most people who have a lot of lighting strikes will opt for the optional plug in lighting protection module instead. But the inbuilt ground may help some of you save a bit of money.
Boundary Kit:
The system comes with the standard 500 feet of 20 gauge boundary wire, two splices and 50 flags which is good for about 1/3 of an acre. More kits and wire upgrades are available in the store section of our website.
Conclusion
It is a great little system. The only really drawback is the proprietary battery. For dogs over 12lbs, there are similarly priced options with rechargeable batteries like the Innotek 4100 that we would rather see you choose. But, for small dogs, this is really the one to get.

Dog Clothes
Thursday, July 29, 2010
Clothes shopping for dogs is very similar to shopping for baby clothes. Unless you go for practicality, cuteness is taken into account. And it's easy to do, remember that any dog wearing clothes looks pretty damn cute.
Options in dog clothes range from winter sweaters to football jerseys and summer tees. You can get a set of flannel PJ's to sleep or to shower after a terry robe. There's even a whole line of Harley clothes for your dog, complete with leather cap and studded collars. Dog costumes made for parties and holidays that are too sweet for words.
If you really want your gift to be a hit with admirers, accessorize. Try a designer dog collar and maybe a pair of cool sunglasses - they make them just for dogs. And I recently heard that leg warmers are made again.
Got a mischievous sense of humor? Make your baby look silly might be no-no, but good clean fun when it comes to dressing up the dog. There are some dog costume a truly creative out there that are good for a laugh or two.
Really there are only a few rules that you will need to remember when shopping for dog clothes:
One is that if a dog is an avid chewer, you should avoid buying anything tempting. Shiny buttons, fringe and feathers are examples that come to mind. An object that can easily be chewed off and swallowed is a choking hazard and can be trapped in the digestive tract of dogs.
Another rule is that every dog, no matter how tolerant, will be more comfortable wearing clothes that fit. Proper fit typically requires measuring from the dog's neck to the base of her tail for length. Most garment girth can be adjusted with velcro tabs, but still could be a problem with barrel-chested breed like a bulldog. Measurements are usually in inches.
Remember that the dog will never "diet down" into clothes that are too small, or - unless you're shopping for a puppy or a pregnant female - "grow into" items that are too big. (Sorry, Grandma.)
Oh, and one more thing - if you're handy with a sewing machine, you can create your own dog clothes creations. Just do not forget to include an opening for the dog to relieve himself. Do not laugh, it often happens!
Dog Clothes - Now, if you're shopping for your own dog, you're ready. But if you buy the clothes for another dog person, I have some tips for you.

Pet Adoption
Thursday, May 6, 2010
Animal shelters are overcrowded with unwanted, abandoned animals. Due to lack of space, these animals are forced to live in cramped conditions and in many jurisdictions are euthanize sooner than normal. Many of these animals would have been adopted if only they were given the time. One solution to the problem of overcrowding is the animal foster care system.
If you love animals but can't commit to a long term situation, pet foster care is perfect for you. Under this system, you take in an animal from the shelter either until there is room to keep it there, someone adopts it permanently or you can no longer keep it. Often just keeping an animal for a few weeks will be enough to give it a new lease on life.
Even if you live in an area where stray animals are not euthanize, foster care is a much better situation for the animals. In a shelter, they receive very little attention and can be neglected. With a foster keeper, the animal has more space and has the close companionship of a human.
If you are truly committed to helping animals, consider taking in an animal that been rehabilitated from abuse. Once they have been rescued, they need time with a mature, responsible owner before they can be allowed to live in other homes. These animals are just as loving as any other, but they need a little special attention to regain their trust in humans.
Fostering an animal is a commitment and you need to be sure you are ready. The worst thing you can do is to take the animal for a few days and make the situation worse by giving him right back. Fostering an animal has all the responsibility of owning one, only without a long term commitment.
Even if you can't have animals where you live, you can help out at the local shelter. Shelter staff are busy and the animals need human companionship. Walkers are always much appreciated or you can simply visit the shelter for a few hours each week and give the animals some human company.

Pet Cemetery

Pet funerals are perhaps the single best way to teach children about dying and the proper emotions one should feel when losing someone they love. The ceremony can show how we honor our responsibility to the dead by giving them a proper, honorable send away.
The type of pet doesn't matter. As adults, we probably won't be terribly affected by the passing of a pet mouse or gold fish that has been with the family for a whopping three weeks. But children are still unsure about things such as proportional response and can be just as affected by one death as another. Every effort should be taken to honor Sam the fish, a family member for 27 days, just as highly as Rocky the Lab, who lived with us daily for 15 years.
A pet funeral is conducted the same way a funeral for human being is. The location is the place best suited, such as a back yard or a dedicated pet cemetery. The occasion should consist of a few words spoken by whoever chooses. Perhaps some music can be played and when the ceremony concludes, a final goodbye given. It's always a good idea for an adult to say a few words on a serious matter about life and death as well as letting the children have their say.
Many people choose to memorialize their pet. This is easily accomplished with a few photos or perhaps a favorite toy. Children can write poems of make drawing of the pet. The death can be commemorated by making a small donation to an animal shelter or other animal related charity.
The loss of a family pet means more than simply the death of an animal. It can mark the passing of time and the transition from one stage of life to another. A family dog acquired when a child is very young will often pass away sometime around the time a child becomes a young adult and can mark a turning point in the child's life. A pet's death is inevitable, but shouldn't be taken lightly.

How to Get Fleas Off a Kitten Or Puppy
Thursday, April 22, 2010
Getting rid of fleas is never easy, but it can be a particularly tough challenge if your pet is not old enough for flea medication. There are some things you can do to ward off the problem in the mean time, but the fleas will likely come back until you can completely eradicate with the medication. Here is a guide for getting rid of fleas on a puppy or kitten until you can use an actual treat the issue with medication.
Bathe the Kitten or Puppy
The easiest thing to do is to bathe your kitten or puppy in mild dishwashing soap like Joy or Dawn.
Run some moderately warm water in the bathtub. Put on rubber gloves in case your pet scratches you. Then the shower hose to run the water over your pet. Pour a quarter size drop of soap in your hand and begin to lather the fur. Be sure to get the soap close to the skin. Rub it in all over, especially near your pet's face. Do not get it in the eyes, but get as close as you can.
When the pet is fully lathered, wrap it in a towel for a moment and just sit there. This allows the soap to kill off the flea eggs. Use tweezers to pick live fleas off your pet's face because that is where they will run to. Dip the tweezers in a cut of water to kill the fleas you pull off. Try to get them all if you can.
Once you have let the soap sink in, use the hose to thoroughly rinse off the soap. Then use a towel to dry down your puppy or kitten and leave the rest to air dry.
Vacuum the House
Try to vacuum the areas that your pet goes to as often as possible to pick up potential flea eggs. There are some mild carpet flea killers out there that are safe to use around kittens and puppies. Simply sprinkle those around and vacuum up as directed.

Alternative Medicine For Pets
Wednesday, April 21, 2010
Domestic pets are exposed to a lot of things that their bodies may not be used to. Artificial foods, preservatives, and a lack of exercise are common traits in any domestic pet's life. This can make your dog or cat get sick and weaken their immune system. Here are a couple of things that you can do to keep your pet healthy, and one alternative medicine that can restore your pet's vitality.
Give your pets clean water to drink. I know it sounds crazy, but your 4-legged buddies benefit from filtered water. Many people do not drink their tap water until it has been run through a filtration system. This practice should be done for your pets too.
Give your cats and dogs a healthy diet. There are many brands of pet food out there. This is one area where the cheapest pet food can do more harm than good. You should try to find pet food that does not contain preservatives or dyes. You should also avoid giving your pet onions or chocolate, because these items can be very toxic to animals.
Try to avoid smoking in the house. We are all aware of the dangers of second hand smoke. But many people forget about their pets when considering this rule. Your puts need to maintain healthy lungs as well. So try to keep the smoking outside.
Make sure that your pet gets exercise. Animals have a lot of energy and they need to be let out to run around. Make sure that you bring them to the park regularly.
These practices can be done by any pet owner. If you want to provide your pet with other health benefits, you can add an extra prevention by providing your pets with compounded herbal products as an alternative medicine for pets. These are designed to fill the gap that your pets miss out on with commercial diets.
