Get Your Disobedient Dog on the Right Track With a Remote Trainer
By William Mac

An unruly dog can be quite a nuisance when going to the park, walking, or even in your own back yard. Neighbors and bystanders can get frustrated by barking and being bothered by your pet. Although running around, barking and playing are all natural behaviors of your dog, everyday activities with them are much easier if they are taught to obey commands and behave in an appropriate manner. Sometimes leash training is not enough and other methods must be used.

A remote trainer is a device many owners are now using as a way to teach their dog appropriate behavior and follow commands. This device allows you to train your dog without a leash. It consists of a collar and a remote control device that delivers a set level of static shock when a command is disobeyed. This shock grabs your dog's attention and teaches them that the discomfort will come when they do not listen to you. The collar has a box with two electrodes. These electrodes must contact the skin in order for it to function properly.

When using one of these devices, take off their regular collar. Have them wear the trainer collar a few times before starting to correct their behaviors so they can become accustomed to it. Training is much like any other dog training. Start with one basic behavior command such as sit or stay and use the correction if they do not follow the command. You may have to show them what the command means a few times before using the correction. Attempt to teach them with a leash for basic understanding before using the remote trainer. If they disobey, correct them with the collar. Give them praise if they follow the command. After one command has been mastered, move on to the next one.

Always start out with the lowest correction level. Increase it as the dog continues to disobey. Continue repeating the command word and giving corrections until the dog obeys. These trainers are not only good for correcting bad behavior, you can also use them to teach your dog tricks and keep them safe. Walking can be a much more pleasant event because you will not have to shout at your dog and can walk them without a leash if desired. This means no more jerking and pulling.

As a dog owner, activities with your dog should be enjoyable for both you and your pet. When your dog does not listen and obey you, this makes each activity stressful and frustrating. All the fun and relaxation is removed and your pet does not get the satisfaction they need while being out. A remote trainer may be just what you need when your dog is not behaving properly and will not listen to you. It will allow you to adjust corrections according to the situation and has been proven to help correct the most disobedient of dogs. Don't spend all your time yelling at your companion and confusing them. Train them to listen to you and understand what is expected of them and everything you do with your best friend will be rewarding and fun.

Petsafe Little Dog Trainer

PetSafe Little Dog Review

By Jay Stephen
The PetSafe Little Dog is the only system designed specifically for the little dog. It has a smaller collar and a toned down correction making it the best choice for dogs under 12 lbs. The only drawback is the proprietary battery.
Most systems are designed with medium sized dogs in mind. This means that the collars are too big to be really comfortable on your smaller dog. The correction levels are also set with medium sized dogs in mind. The PetSafe small dog addresses those problems. It is also flexible, and can be used with other PetSafe collars to let you use the system with larger dogs too.
Box Contents
The Collar:
The collar is the reason you are buying this system. The collar is much smaller than a regular dog fence collar. The band is also more adjustable, letting you set it to even the smallest neck size. The correction level is also scaled down. You set the correction level on the collar itself, using the button on the side. The system has four correction levels. You set this by using the button on the side of the collar.
The battery is a special PetSafe small dog battery that you change by unscrewing with a coin. It is the only downside of this system. The battery costs around $8 and lasts about two months. A little tip, you can squeeze a third month out of the battery if you switch off the collar when you take it off the dog at night (just turn the battery to the off position).
You can use this collar with the other PetSafe in-ground systems and vice-versa. So you could use this with you Chihuahua, the PetSafe stubborn dog with your great dane, and the PetSafe deluxe collar with your Labrador.
Base Station:
The small dog uses the premium PetSafe base station that is also used by the PetSafe Deluxe. The base station is capable of covering 25 acres (5,000 feet of boundary wire). It has the basic controls. The boundary width dials lets you set how widely the signal transmits out from the wire. You have a power status light and a loop status light to tell you there are no problems with the loop. A side switch to set it up for big, small and medium sized installations. Two toggles connect up the boundary wire loop. There is a third toggle to ground the system in case of lightning strikes, you are going to need a grounding rod nearby to hook this and most people don't. So most people who have a lot of lighting strikes will opt for the optional plug in lighting protection module instead. But the inbuilt ground may help some of you save a bit of money.
Boundary Kit:
The system comes with the standard 500 feet of 20 gauge boundary wire, two splices and 50 flags which is good for about 1/3 of an acre. More kits and wire upgrades are available in the store section of our website.
Conclusion
It is a great little system. The only really drawback is the proprietary battery. For dogs over 12lbs, there are similarly priced options with rechargeable batteries like the Innotek 4100 that we would rather see you choose. But, for small dogs, this is really the one to get.

Chihuahuas - The Celebrity Choice Dog
By Melissa Turner

They've been spotted everywhere-the streets of Hollywood, the beaches of Miami, and the hotels of New York and London. Have you noticed the global spurt of celebrities' fascination (or possibly obsession?) with Chihuahuas? At first it was thought to simply be a phase; either it's a short, or the Chihuahuadom in Hollywood has begun for the long haul.
Who owns these dogs? The list is endless, but here are some of the celebrity biggies: Paris Hilton's Chihuahua, Tinkerbell; Britney Spear's Bit Bit and Lucky; Hilary' Duff's Lola; Scarlett Johansson's Maggie; Sandra Bullock's Chihuahua mix Poppy; and Demi Moore's Yorkie-Chihuahua mix, Louie.
Why do Chihuahuas appeal to celebrities? First, Chihuahuas are normally 6-9 inches in height and 2-6 lbs in weight. This equals a teeny tiny full grown pup. Because celebrities are always on the move, they have a perfectly portable pet in a Chihuahua-they can easily be taken nearly anywhere; the spa, the film set, a private airplane, a shopping spree, a sporting event...you name it. Also, celebrities seem to love buying accessories and items for their precious pooches: carrying bags, jeweled (yes, jeweled) personal collars, doggie sweaters and outfits, custom made leashes, etc. Celebrities have money to spend; why not diffuse cash on their puppy companion?
These dogs have not only grown in popularity because they are owned by celebrities; they now stand on their own four feet. Consider Paris Hilton's Tinkerbell, who seemed to have been the groundbreaking pup which was first in the Chihuahua trend. Tinkerbell even has her own doggie diary, titled, The Tinkerbell Hilton Diaries: My Life Tailing Paris Hilton, by Tinkerbell Hilton. A doggie author? This book is 112 pages full of Tinkerbell's first-person (or is it first-canine?) thoughts as she trails Paris around the world.
Are these celebrity pooches only as popular as their owners, or can they exceed the fame of their mommies? Britney Spear's pup, Bit Bit, is only popular because of the struggle between Britney and Kevin; Kevin thought the Britney's Bit Bit might be harmful to their children. Britney agreed to get rid of Lucky after she snapped at Kevin one day in May, but Bit Bit remained. Are Chihuahuas aggressive pups?
Chihuahua's are known for their extreme loyalty to their owners. They are loving pets who demand attention from their owners, yet they freely give it as well. They are wary of dogs other than Chihuahuas, primarily because they are tiny and sometimes are easily scared. If a Chihuahua is well-socialized, they are happy to be dotted upon and passed around from person to person. They are not recommended for children because Chihuahuas are naturally nervous and edgy dogs, and the teasing actions of a child may cause them to become afraid and nip with their sharp teeth. Chihuahuas are energetic, dotting, and saucy pets; they know what they want, and they plan to get it. Compare their temperament to that of a celebrity; there seem to be a few similarities. Is the primary appeal to a celebrity of owning a Chihuahua because they can keep up with the fast and famous lifestyle? Quite possibly.

Try the PetSafe Ultrasonic Pet Trainer For an Easy Way to Correct Your Small Dog Wherever You Go
By William Mac
When you are the owner of a small dog, you know they tend to bark at almost anything. They are very territorial and use their bark to communicate fear, protect, and show excitement. Barking is normal for any dog, but can be a nuisance to you and the people around you. You must be able to control your small dogs barking when necessary and dog training products can be very affective in helping you teach your dog when it is not appropriate to bark.
Why do dogs bark? Sometimes it is an instinct to something being wrong or for protection of their family. It is often a way for them to communicate something they need such as going to the bathroom or because they are hungry. They may bark when around other dogs or animals. Consider why your dog is barking before determining and try to eliminate the cause. If you cannot remove the problem, knowing what triggers their barking will help make training easier.
Many dog trainers say that in order for you to train your dog effectively, you must understand the training and know your dog. Understanding the training you are using allows you to know what your dog is going through and will help prevent you from confusing your dog or being contradictive in your training. The PetSafe ultrasonic pet trainer is a great training tool when you comprehend your small dog's behavior. It can be very affective when used correctly. Any training aid can fail you if you do not know the proper training methods that go with it.
Don't be in a hurry to train your dog and resolve the barking. Training takes time and constant correction can be detrimental to your dog's progress. Use them when normal training and commands are not effective. Proper use and training will teach your dog to refrain from barking in specific situations. You do not want your dog to completely stop barking because there are times when their bark is welcomed and could preventing a burglar from breaking or some other catastrophic event.
The PetSafe ultrasonic pet trainer works as a collarless trainer and distracts your dog from barking by emitting a high frequency sound that cannot be heard by humans and is unpleasant to your dog. It has a range of thirty feet and operates as a hand-held device that can easily go anywhere with you. This particular device also has a positive tone that can be used to reward your dog for positive behaviors. It can be used indoors or outdoors, is lightweight, and runs on a nine volt battery. Do not use it for dogs under six months old or any dog that is over twenty-five pounds.
Consider devices like this to train your dog how to behave appropriately and no participate in negative behaviors. Research the training method and decide what behaviors you want to correct and how. This will help you effectively train your dog and get the results you want. Remember to train for one thing at a time and not to rush the training. By doing so, your end result will be a well behaved dog.

How To Choose A Professional Dog Trainer
By Adam G. Katz

1.) Versatility-- A good dog trainer will use techniques and training styles which are compatible with your dog's temperament. Every dog is different, and some dogs respond better to certain approaches. What works for a Rottweiler won't necessarily work for a Poodle.

2.) Experience-- I know people who have been driving an automobile for 30 years and still can't parallel park! And dog training is the same way! Don't measure a dog trainer's skill by his number of years in the profession. Instead, judge a trainer by what he has done in the 'Dog World,' rather than how long he has been doing it.

3.) Cost-- When you pay for training, make sure you are paying for results... not for a specified number of hours or sessions. Good dog trainers know that every dog (and owner) is different. Some need more time to learn than others.

4.) Avoid Group Classes-- I've never seen a dog that is 100% reliable come out of a group class. When professional dog trainers train their own dogs, they never do it in a group setting. It's always one-on-one. There are just too many distractions for a new dog in a group class.

5.) How Much Should You Expect To Pay For a Good Dog Training Program: Expect to pay between $400 and $1200. A good dog trainer will sometimes have a waiting list of dog owners who want to work with him. Your goal should be to work with the best dog trainer you can find, not to haggle over the price. And in virtually all cases that we've seen, the dog trainers who are charging bargain basement prices are the ones who you probably don't want to be working with in the first place. It's better to spend your money intelligently on a top-notch dog training program in the first place, than to waste your money chasing a bargain, and then have to pay more money for a good dog trainer somewhere down the line.

6.) Ask for a Free Consultationhttp://animalsofzoo.blogspot.com/: You don't need to pay a dog trainer to take a look at your dog. This should be done for free. And besides, you don't want to pay money to meet a dog trainer, and then have to decide whether you want to work with him!

7.) Should You Send Your Dog Away To Be Trained? No. The idea of doing this is largely a scam predicated on kenneling the dog so that the dog training company can charge you even more money. For example, as a skilled dog trainer, I can train your dog, and get him responding in a very impressive manner, in about two days. But when I give him back to you, he's going to say, "I've never had to do anything you say before! Why should I start now?" It's just like driving. I can build you a fantastic sports car, but if you don't learn how to drive it, it won't get you from point A to point B. You must find a dog trainer who will teach YOU how to train YOUR DOG!

8.) Should You Have A Dog Trainer Come To Your Home? No. It's going to work much better if you learn to train your dog in a neutral territory.

9.) Why You Should Avoid the big, chain pet store dog training programs: Because in most cases, the dog trainers you'll encounter have only 2 to 3 months experience, and have been recruited through a newspaper ad. Dog training is both an art and a science. There is no way that you can become a professional dog trainer without apprenticing with several experienced dog trainers, with varied backgrounds, over an acceptable period of time. Stay away from the large pet store dog training programs.

Gun Dog Trainers

Hit a Wall With Your Gun Dog Training?
By Gregory Barrett

Don't assume the dog doesn't relate the command with the pressure. The refusal stage is a key moment in the process. The dog is now refusing as an avoidance mechanism.
Before you move to walking fetch you should get a good reaction on the table when you give the fetch command. Right before you go to walking fetch, if you were to take a hold the dog buy the collar and hold the bumper out in front of the dog and say fetch, that dog should make tracks into the concrete and practically spin you in circles.
Now you know the dog gets the picture, then go to walking fetch and when the dog balks at the fetch command, go to the ear immediately then go through the walking fetch with stick fetch. If you're weak at the walking fetch or stick fetch and tip toe through it, when it comes to pile work and driving the dog, you're going to have major issues.
A lot of the dog's training is based from force fetch. Go to the bumper, go to the bumper, go to the bumper. The yard work period keeps pressure on the dog the whole time. He needs to understand that in order to stop the pressure he needs to get to that bumper. When you get to pile work, you will be glad that you have a solid foundation from the table. Give the command...back or fetch. Next its force to the pile. The dog already understands pressure from the ear pinch this is where you use the e-collar and drive the dog to the pile.
A lot of this stuff repeats somewhere along the training so if you're having issues, take the step back and really drive the idea home on how you want the dog to perform.

Dog Clothes

Thursday, July 29, 2010

Dog Clothes - Dogs love any kind of attention you lavish them. So, Spike will wear his outfit - whether it's funny or ridiculous - as soon as he saw how happy it makes the owner. Spot will eat all the extra attention he gets from strangers. And Fifi might even want to Vogue for the camera.

Clothes shopping for dogs is very similar to shopping for baby clothes. Unless you go for practicality, cuteness is taken into account. And it's easy to do, remember that any dog wearing clothes looks pretty damn cute.

Options in dog clothes range from winter sweaters to football jerseys and summer tees. You can get a set of flannel PJ's to sleep or to shower after a terry robe. There's even a whole line of Harley clothes for your dog, complete with leather cap and studded collars. Dog costumes made for parties and holidays that are too sweet for words.

If you really want your gift to be a hit with admirers, accessorize. Try a designer dog collar and maybe a pair of cool sunglasses - they make them just for dogs. And I recently heard that leg warmers are made again.

Got a mischievous sense of humor? Make your baby look silly might be no-no, but good clean fun when it comes to dressing up the dog. There are some dog costume a truly creative out there that are good for a laugh or two.

Really there are only a few rules that you will need to remember when shopping for dog clothes:
One is that if a dog is an avid chewer, you should avoid buying anything tempting. Shiny buttons, fringe and feathers are examples that come to mind. An object that can easily be chewed off and swallowed is a choking hazard and can be trapped in the digestive tract of dogs.

Another rule is that every dog, no matter how tolerant, will be more comfortable wearing clothes that fit. Proper fit typically requires measuring from the dog's neck to the base of her tail for length. Most garment girth can be adjusted with velcro tabs, but still could be a problem with barrel-chested breed like a bulldog. Measurements are usually in inches.

Remember that the dog will never "diet down" into clothes that are too small, or - unless you're shopping for a puppy or a pregnant female - "grow into" items that are too big. (Sorry, Grandma.)

Oh, and one more thing - if you're handy with a sewing machine, you can create your own dog clothes creations. Just do not forget to include an opening for the dog to relieve himself. Do not laugh, it often happens!

Dog Clothes - Now, if you're shopping for your own dog, you're ready. But if you buy the clothes for another dog person, I have some tips for you.

Pet Adoption

Thursday, May 6, 2010

Animal shelters are overcrowded with unwanted, abandoned animals. Due to lack of space, these animals are forced to live in cramped conditions and in many jurisdictions are euthanize sooner than normal. Many of these animals would have been adopted if only they were given the time. One solution to the problem of overcrowding is the animal foster care system.

If you love animals but can't commit to a long term situation, pet foster care is perfect for you. Under this system, you take in an animal from the shelter either until there is room to keep it there, someone adopts it permanently or you can no longer keep it. Often just keeping an animal for a few weeks will be enough to give it a new lease on life.

Even if you live in an area where stray animals are not euthanize, foster care is a much better situation for the animals. In a shelter, they receive very little attention and can be neglected. With a foster keeper, the animal has more space and has the close companionship of a human.

If you are truly committed to helping animals, consider taking in an animal that been rehabilitated from abuse. Once they have been rescued, they need time with a mature, responsible owner before they can be allowed to live in other homes. These animals are just as loving as any other, but they need a little special attention to regain their trust in humans.

Fostering an animal is a commitment and you need to be sure you are ready. The worst thing you can do is to take the animal for a few days and make the situation worse by giving him right back. Fostering an animal has all the responsibility of owning one, only without a long term commitment.

Even if you can't have animals where you live, you can help out at the local shelter. Shelter staff are busy and the animals need human companionship. Walkers are always much appreciated or you can simply visit the shelter for a few hours each week and give the animals some human company.

Pet Cemetery

Tuesday, May 4, 2010

Some people may feel that having a funeral for a pet is going a bit too far. Those people have likely never had a pet that was part of the family for many years. A funeral for a pet accomplishes the same thing that a funeral for a human does. The pet is honored, we remember all the good times of our lives that we shared with the pet and we say a final goodbye.

Pet funerals are perhaps the single best way to teach children about dying and the proper emotions one should feel when losing someone they love. The ceremony can show how we honor our responsibility to the dead by giving them a proper, honorable send away.

The type of pet doesn't matter. As adults, we probably won't be terribly affected by the passing of a pet mouse or gold fish that has been with the family for a whopping three weeks. But children are still unsure about things such as proportional response and can be just as affected by one death as another. Every effort should be taken to honor Sam the fish, a family member for 27 days, just as highly as Rocky the Lab, who lived with us daily for 15 years.

A pet funeral is conducted the same way a funeral for human being is. The location is the place best suited, such as a back yard or a dedicated pet cemetery. The occasion should consist of a few words spoken by whoever chooses. Perhaps some music can be played and when the ceremony concludes, a final goodbye given. It's always a good idea for an adult to say a few words on a serious matter about life and death as well as letting the children have their say.

Many people choose to memorialize their pet. This is easily accomplished with a few photos or perhaps a favorite toy. Children can write poems of make drawing of the pet. The death can be commemorated by making a small donation to an animal shelter or other animal related charity.

The loss of a family pet means more than simply the death of an animal. It can mark the passing of time and the transition from one stage of life to another. A family dog acquired when a child is very young will often pass away sometime around the time a child becomes a young adult and can mark a turning point in the child's life. A pet's death is inevitable, but shouldn't be taken lightly.

How to Get Fleas Off a Kitten Or Puppy

Thursday, April 22, 2010

Getting rid of fleas is never easy, but it can be a particularly tough challenge if your pet is not old enough for flea medication. There are some things you can do to ward off the problem in the mean time, but the fleas will likely come back until you can completely eradicate with the medication. Here is a guide for getting rid of fleas on a puppy or kitten until you can use an actual treat the issue with medication.

Bathe the Kitten or Puppy

The easiest thing to do is to bathe your kitten or puppy in mild dishwashing soap like Joy or Dawn.

Run some moderately warm water in the bathtub. Put on rubber gloves in case your pet scratches you. Then the shower hose to run the water over your pet. Pour a quarter size drop of soap in your hand and begin to lather the fur. Be sure to get the soap close to the skin. Rub it in all over, especially near your pet's face. Do not get it in the eyes, but get as close as you can.

When the pet is fully lathered, wrap it in a towel for a moment and just sit there. This allows the soap to kill off the flea eggs. Use tweezers to pick live fleas off your pet's face because that is where they will run to. Dip the tweezers in a cut of water to kill the fleas you pull off. Try to get them all if you can.

Once you have let the soap sink in, use the hose to thoroughly rinse off the soap. Then use a towel to dry down your puppy or kitten and leave the rest to air dry.

Vacuum the House

Try to vacuum the areas that your pet goes to as often as possible to pick up potential flea eggs. There are some mild carpet flea killers out there that are safe to use around kittens and puppies. Simply sprinkle those around and vacuum up as directed.

Alternative Medicine For Pets

Wednesday, April 21, 2010

Many people are not aware of the alternative medicine for pets that is available. There are many products that can help your dog or cat maintain a healthy appetite, promote healthy organs, and restore energy levels and overall vitality. Here are a few ways that alternative medicine for pets can help your animals.

Domestic pets are exposed to a lot of things that their bodies may not be used to. Artificial foods, preservatives, and a lack of exercise are common traits in any domestic pet's life. This can make your dog or cat get sick and weaken their immune system. Here are a couple of things that you can do to keep your pet healthy, and one alternative medicine that can restore your pet's vitality.

Give your pets clean water to drink. I know it sounds crazy, but your 4-legged buddies benefit from filtered water. Many people do not drink their tap water until it has been run through a filtration system. This practice should be done for your pets too.

Give your cats and dogs a healthy diet. There are many brands of pet food out there. This is one area where the cheapest pet food can do more harm than good. You should try to find pet food that does not contain preservatives or dyes. You should also avoid giving your pet onions or chocolate, because these items can be very toxic to animals.

Try to avoid smoking in the house. We are all aware of the dangers of second hand smoke. But many people forget about their pets when considering this rule. Your puts need to maintain healthy lungs as well. So try to keep the smoking outside.

Make sure that your pet gets exercise. Animals have a lot of energy and they need to be let out to run around. Make sure that you bring them to the park regularly.

These practices can be done by any pet owner. If you want to provide your pet with other health benefits, you can add an extra prevention by providing your pets with compounded herbal products as an alternative medicine for pets. These are designed to fill the gap that your pets miss out on with commercial diets.

Hamster Housing

Saturday, April 3, 2010

So... you have decided that it is time for your family to have a new pet, and that pet is going to be a hamster. Have you decided on the type of housing you will provide for your new hamster? There are a number of factors you should consider when purchasing a habitat or cage for a hamster, including size, space, supplies/accessories and safety of the animal. Let's take a closer look at these factors, and how to deal with them.

Habitats and Housing

When it comes time to purchase a home for your hamster, there are four things you need to think about:

Size: Hamsters need exercise, so you need to make sure that there is plenty of room in the cage for them to exercise. There should also be areas for eating, sleeping and using the bathroom. At least two square feet is needed for an optimal hamster living space. You can add space by purchasing cage add-ons, such as tunnels and houses.

Space

Where you place the hamster habitat in your home is very important. You have to ensure that the habitat is not in direct sunlight, or in a noisy area of the house. Because hamsters are nocturnal, they need to have a quiet place to sleep during the day.

Hamster habitats should not be located in areas that are too hot or too cold, as either can be detrimental to the health of your hamster.

Habitats should be placed where small children and other animals can't get at them. Also, make sure you place it where it is not likely to fall.

Obviously, putting a hamster habitat in a kitchen is a bad idea, because things that the hamster moves around, like bedding, food, and feces, could contaminate your food.

Supplies and Accessories

You will need the following supplies and accessories to ensure the health and happiness of your new hamster:

Food and water: Have a bowl or dish for food, and a specially-made water bottle that the hamster can't chew apart.

Good bedding: This should be absorbent. Items that work well include cotton, wood shavings, shredded paper and pellets.

Exercise wheel: Hamsters need exercise, and a good wheel will provide that exercise. Make sure it is large enough for the hamster.

House or enclosed sleeping area: Just like you, your hamster likes to feel snug when sleeping, so provide an area just for this purpose.

Toys: Hamsters need toys for exploring, such as tubes (can be as simple as paper towel rolls), tunnels, ramps and nooks and crannies to hide in. They also need toys that they can chew on.

Safety

If you are going to have more than one hamster, make sure, if the breeds are different, that they are compatible. Also, remember that if you have male and female pairs, you can expect babies!

Make sure you inspect the habitat, and make sure that you have eliminated any chance of escape! Hamsters are great escape artists, so you want to give them as little opportunity to do so as possible.

By following the above steps, your hamster is sure to be healthy and happy.

Addison's Disease and It's Effect on Your Pet

Addison's disease is a rare condition that can affect dogs and cats of any breed or age. This endocrine disorder occurs when the adrenal glands fail to manufacture enough adrenal hormones.

Certain breeds of dogs are genetically predisposed to getting Addison's disease. Poodles, Airedales, Saint Bernards, and German Shepherds are among these breeds.

The adrenal glands are in the stomach area right in front of the kidneys. These important glands produce corticosteroids, adrenaline, mineralocorticoids and androgens. Without these hormones it becomes difficult for your pet to metabolize their food and maintain a regular balance of potassium, salt and H2O. Blood pressure, stress and heart rate are also controlled by the hormones produced in the adrenal glands.

There are several things that can signify Addison's disease. If you pet is not eating enough, lethargic, dehydrated, weak, depressed or vomiting then they could be suffering from this rare adrenal gland disorder. Make sure you take them to the vet right away. Even if it is not Addison's disease there could be another serious problem brewing.

Your vet will give your pet a complete examination and look over it's medical history. They might run a CBC (complete blood count), urine test, x-rays and an ultrasound. Once other disorders are ruled out they should be able to give you an accurate diagnosis.

Researchers have not discovered the cause of Addison's disease but many of them think it has to do with the adrenal glands being destroyed by the dogs/cats immune system. Heredity, infection, cancer and withdrawal from a steroid prescription can also contribute to causing Addison's.

Unfortunately, there is no cure for Addison's disease. If it is caught early a long term treatment plan can be setup and your pet can still enjoy the rest of it's life.

Addison's disease is treated differently depending on how severe the symptoms are. If it is a chronic case then hormone replacement therapy might be in order. For these cases, a salt supplement is often given once a day.

If your pet is in crisis it might need to be hospitalized. An IV will be started and the electrolytes and acids will be monitored. Hormones will likely be given to them while they are still in the hospital.

Chamomilla, zingiber, cratageous, nux vom and lycopus are herbs that can help your pet along because of their effect on keeping the endocrine system in balance and their support for the thyroids. If you decide to use a natural medicine you should still talk to your vet. There might be things you need to do, in addition to a natural routine.
